There is no more doubt about it today, it has been proven that the first resource to scale your business before anything else is yourself and the way you approach it. On top of the proper mindset you must have to succeed, there is also a need to have a kind of productivity routine. The first enemy of productivity is distraction, so i’ll share with you in the following lines some simple but highly valuable tips successful online entrepreneurs use to stay focus on growing their business!
- Create a daily “To do list” with no more than 3 tasks: It’s a good practice to focus on some few tasks per day, and finish it completely with no pressure. If you have a long list of things to do, at some point of the day you can start rushing to finish and produce low quality work. To avoid that, create a list of 3 items to do per day, and put the rest on the next day list.
- Use a timer: In the online business (or any other business i guess…), time is money! it’s the only thing with more value out there, as it’s what we trade for our income. So wasting time is never a good idea, that’s why you want to know how long you take to completely finish each daily task involved in your business grow. You can user a timer (kitchen timer, cell phone timer or any other) to check this out. For example, you can set to 25-30 min to write and publish a blog post or a newsletter to your list. The goal is to improve the average time you spend to completely finish each of your important task.
- Leverage new applications to avoid online distraction: When it’s time to work, you want to avoid any distraction like TV, social media, etc. There some plugins now available on web browsers that you can use to temporarily block distracting websites (like facebook, twitter, google+, skype, etc) during your working hours. You can use for example “Leechblock” for firefox, or “StayFocused” for google chrome.
- Set a specific time of the day to read and answer your emails: This approach is much more efficient that checking your emails box all day long, because it indeed keep you distracted from your ongoing task and reduce your productivity. This has to be considered a separate task, not something you do while working on other stuff.Unless you are expecting a specific important mail, put this task at the end of your daily to do list.
- Do the most important things first: As mentioned before, you must create a “To do list” for every working day with the task to be completed, and write it in your calendar. While doing that, it’s important to remember to always put the most important task first on the list. The reason is that as it’s important you need to approach it with a fresh mind, and it’s also to make sure that no matter how busy your day become you’ll get it done. For some reasons you may need to cancel / postpone some activity, it better be the least important.
- Make your breaks more productive: After a task well accomplished, it’s usual and recommended to take a break. But taking a break doesn’t have to means you should lose that time! remember, time is money… so when it’s time to relax, do something else, change activity, but to something productive. You can go for a run (or any other sport you practice), reorganize your working environment, read a book, etc…the thing is, don’t be lazy because that can impact your result on the next task.
- Reward yourself for things well done: Well you finish a task particularly important or difficult, something you have been working on for a while and had to make unusual research/efforts to accomplish, it’s important you get yourself a small reward when it’s finally completed. This is important for self confident and empower you to go forward! This will also remind you that you should never give up until you succeed, as reward comes after efforts.
- Leverage your qualities: To be more productive, you need to know yourself a little bit deeper than the average…observe your particular habits, preferences, strengths, weaknesses, etc… and utilize all this knowledge to maximize your daily productivity. For example you need to know what time of the day you are more productive and willing to work (that will be the best time to schedule critical tasks), or what are your best sleeping hours to have good rest.
